True Love or a Confidence Trick?

Account 1

As orgasm is achieved and, as the semen flows, the lovers smother each other in kisses and utter endearments clutching each other and making promises of undying allegiance.
The replicators rub their metaphorical hands with glee for the species has just reproduced itself, the hereditary information has been transmitted and a pact has been made to raise and protect the offspring until it, too, is capable of reproducing itself.

The illusion of love has done its job. It has duped the human subjects into fulfilling the only true imperative – that of perpetuating the species and continuing the battle to survive. “Love” has simply been a means to an end.

Account 2

As orgasm is achieved and, as the semen flows, the lovers smother each other in kisses and utter endearments clutching each other and making promises of undying allegiance.
The lovers gaze into each other’s eyes and then laugh with sheer joy, hugging and joking. They enjoy years of each other’s company and of the company of their offspring.

It is these years of trusting and loving company and mutual joy (human life in other words) that are the imperative and the true end. This is what the reproduction of the species provides and enabling this is the true purpose of the universe.

Looking at the ‘lovers’, in the moment of orgasm (assuming we have permission to do so! – let’s say that these are imaginary lovers), the tableau is neutral in that no narrative is imposed on it. It is perfectly possible, though, after the event, to impose either of the two accounts above on these events.

What will determine which one one seeks to impose? Perhaps a predisposition to a pre-conceived narrative which would be confounded were events shown not to fit with it. To allow oneself to be undermined, purely, by such prejudice would hardly be properly scientific when engaged in the observation of such events, of course. It would make for a poor study.

It is interesting that the out and out evolutionists will still buy their wives Valentine cards.
