Vers libres

In lines like a chess board
In the lattices
Of where I am,
In running words
And sword
To order this tree and street
To treat
The patches of sunlight,
Get right
The day’s decline
In lines like a chessboard.
Lines that come from me
And don’t obey
The calls of what was there
Before,
Lines that sneak and snake
Into life
Defying blocks of verse
that set the tune.
That catch
On pavement that
Shadowed woman
There and gone;
Known face.
Keeping this side of false,
Unclaimed by artifice.
Wriggle free
And say something,
Something worth saying,
Said in a place
Found at last,
After so much hunting.
