On the Side of the Angels

People worry about how they come across (to themselves and in the forum of public opinion, that being the most important forum of all these days, there no longer considered being a secret forum of each man's soul). That being the case, there is an immense attraction to being things where no one would dare interrogate the apparently incontestable morality involved. Exhibiting sympathy, empathy and commiseration with others is an area where one feels beyond criticism for no one is going to challenge you if you appear to have a heart, for fear of appearing heart-less. Hence the predilection for emoting as much as possible on TV and in TV drama. In another area a large increase in paedophile vigilantism has been noted; for who is going to argue with someone who devotes themselves to the fight against what we can all agree is a very unpleasant crime? These things really amount to taking the shortcut of least resistance, though, in the effort to present oneself as being on the side of the angels. The main priority is not the showing of 'heart' or protection of children it is keeping oneself safe in the court of public opinion.
