‘Blessed are they who lean on Italian Astronomers, for they will be comforted.’
‘Blessed are those who massacre the infidel, for they will see God.’
‘Blessed are the oppressors of women and homosexuals for they will be called Children of God.’
‘Blessed are the imperialists for they shall inherit the earth.’
‘Blessed are the slavemasters for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.’
Of course, you won’t find any of these verses in the New Testament but you’d think such enjoinders were there. Christianity is always attacked for what it is _not_ and hardly ever on the grounds of what it _is_. Because it is a contingent religion existing in a fallen world the fact that it didn’t deliver a perfect (modern Liberal) progressive vision it is blamed for everything rather than seen as a force that may, invisibly, have made the world much better than it otherwise might have been. The worst century for atrocities was the one in which it’s influence was the least evident after all.
