A long long time ago the churches were seen as the natural guardians of the moral (now we have the Guardian!). Having lost this role, largely through their own fault, there is an unseemly scrabble amongst others to wrest control of it. This is because it is the lever that moves the universe. It operates in the sphere that distinguishes us from other beasts. Once seized it gives the right to make ex cathedra pronouncements on one's enemy's morality. If one can do this one no longer feels the obligation to address that enemy's arguments. One can simply circumvent that whole process by announcing that the corruption of his character makes such grubby engagements unnecessary. The ultimate power......
