The Geography of the Human

We are animals but we are the only animal with a thin layer of self-aware consciousness attached to us. It is the presence of this sliver that defines and distinguishes us and is the most noteworthy thing in the geography of the human. Determinists miss it completely. It is where free will, responsibility, moral awareness, and our dignity, our freedom and our drama reside. Failure to notice it is a spectacular failure of observation of detail regarding the lie of the anthropological landscape. The fact that the whole world and the whole of human history has functioned through legal systems that assume all of the qualities with which it endows us is the evidence that, although it might be invisible and unavailable to the measuring instruments of science, it exists. It is the place where I am writing this from.
