There are plenty on the left who define themselves entirely by their opposition to Tories. This is because they have no being outside this opposition. They are made of ideology. In this sense they depend for their very being on the presence of the Tory ‘villain’ and the faux-heroism it affords them. If the Tory establishment vanished so would they. In this sense the Tory party fulfils a vital psychological function for them.
