Is the Profane the Sacred?
It’s the Tree of Knowledge not the Tree of Carnal Knowledge. These are completely different animals or, perhaps, species. The sane person knows that human love is indivisible from sex. The platonist tries to sever the cerebellum and the cerebral from the nether regions in a version of Gnosticism. Man cannot live solely in the high cerebellum. The atmosphere is too rarified, the air is too thin and the brain needs the blood supply from the heart and the body. Is erotic love Sir Roger’s “corrupting bondage” which we have to flee or the lifeblood of a creature for whom sex is the vehicle of love. Perhaps Sir Roger was too high; a high liberal in the Bloomsbury style rather than a conservative in the end? There is the sacred and the profane but perhaps the profane is the sacred.
