When one set of behaviour overlaps with
another in a person like a Venn diagram that person can often become the thing
with which he/she overlaps.
Example 1) Chamelon-like, Jeremy Corbyn does an impression of a supporter of the IRA, of Hamas or of Hezbollah. His colour changes to their colour and against their background he becomes indistinguishable from them whilst all the while he insists on his intellectual independence. Once in such proximity and once indulging in such imitation, is it not inevitable that not only the colour will seep from one to the other? A wise man withdraws when he feels this process happening as, sooner or later, he/she will become morally responsible. The real world won’t make fine distinctions and any politician worth his salt cannot not know this.
Example 2) Reality required that Oliver Cromwell assumed the role of Lord Protector because it quickly became apparent that someone had to make decisions and dispense authority. On his investiture he assumed the title of ‘His Highness’ and he very quickly accumulated the accoutrements of regalia in order, it was said, solely to project authority. He had ceremonies, “the cloth of estates, great officers, heralds, drums, trumpeters, rich coaches, rich furniture for horses, guards, marshal’s men “ etc and a large entourage. Precious tapestries and Raphael cartoons from Charles’ collection decorated the Palace of Whitehall in which he lived and through the window of which Charles I had stepped onto the scaffolding where he was beheaded. Did Oliver unwittingly become Charles, because once you assume the robes you discover how fine it is to wear them?
