Against Nature

A big divide in the world seems to be between those who accept and, indeed, celebrate that we have a given nature and that human society has natural ways of behaving, economically, say, and those who rebel against such ideas. The latter give primacy to the human intellect and its ability to construct and impose artificial models on the world; in a sense to be able to re-create it in a new image of their choosing.
The first group have no trouble accepting that certain things are "given" by evolution or God, that they were beyond their control and that they weren't consulted on the matter. They see such acceptance as no kind of demeaning of their dignity. The second group see rebelling against this as a kind of sophistication rather than hubristic folly. They seek to place themselves in the role of creator and refashioner, often aided by a faith in the scientising form of science.
I think this could be correlated with some current political divides.
